Lace it up for kids

As of now, the number of children visiting the current facilities at BC Children's Hospital more than doubles the designed capacity. This is a great cause which will help them build a new hospital - a charity that Arash is really keen on raising money for.

Please visit this site: http://bcchf.net/laceup/ and click the "Join a team" option.  You should see our team listed as UBC ISSA.

Skates are available for rent at the UBC Arena, reserve in advance as they have a limited supply. Email laceup09@gmail.com with your first and last name, as well as your shoe size.

Whether you're a pro-figure skater or skating impaired like myself, please JOIN OUR TEAM and help raise a bit of $ for the kids!
Looking forward to seeing you all on the ice/on the benches at 7pm on Thursday January 29th!

Robson Reading Series with Dr. Gabor Mate

For over ten years Gabor Maté has been the staff physician at the Portland Hotel, a residence and harm reduction facility in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. His patients are challenged by life-threatening drug addictions, schizophrenia, mental ill-ness, Hepatitis C, HIV and, in many cases, all four. But if Dr. Maté's patients are at the far end of the spectrum, how many of us are also struggling with addiction?

Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, work, food, sex, gambling and excessive inappropriate spending: what is amiss with our lives that we seek such self-destructive ways to comfort ourselves? And why is it so difficult to stop these habits, even as they threaten our health, jeopardize our relationships and corrode our lives?

B.C. drug injection site legal, court rules

In a surprise ruling, the court supported Vancouver's experimental supervised injection clinic and halted federal attempts to close the facility.

Judge Ian Pitfield said Insite should be allowed to remain open for a year even without a federal exemption from current drug laws.

ISSA had organized the INSITE Conference on Thursday, March 6th 2008, which was a great initiative towards getting the limelight on INSITE`s achievement, and how politics had manipulated and suppressed the scientific research done on the effectiveness on INSITE.
